Life Along the Manitou Passage / The Age of Schooners
About the Curriculum
The Manitou Passage Web pages are part of a broader maritime history program funded by a Department of the Interior National Maritime Heritage Grant through the Michigan Department of State and the State Historic Preservation Office. The other learning tools funded by this grant include:
  • Construction of a working schooner model
  • Building of three sea chests that will be loaned to schools
  • A maritime history curriculum
The maritime history curriculum: "The Age of Great Lakes Schooners: Life Along the Manitou Passage" is designed to be used with later elementary grades, but can also be used with older students. The curriculum is aligned to the State of Michigan Social Studies Objectives and complements these Web pages. The following themes are explored through this curriculum: lumbering, transportation of goods and people, shipwrecks and rescue, fishing, and navigation. Each of these themes is explored at historic sites along the Manitou Passage through more detailed background information and related activities. The curriculum will be included with the sea chest as well as charts, music, and sailing artifacts that support the activities.

The curriculum will be ready for distribution beginning in fall or winter of 1999.
