Protecting our Great Lakes through Science Education and Stewardship

Protecting the Great Lakes through Education

Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help people of all ages experience the science and spirit of the Great Lakes through hands-on, experiential learning activities aboard a traditionally-rigged tall ship schooner. The knowledge gained through these experiences will provide the education, understanding, and commitment needed for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes.

ISEA was established in 1989 to provide aquatic science, environmental awareness, and sail training classes for learners of all ages. Classes are conducted aboard tall ships to complement traditional classroom studies in ecology, history, geography, geology, biology, chemistry, and meteorology.

  • Classic Boat Show & Great Lakes Celebration

The 2014 Inland Seas Classic Boat Show and Great Lakes Celebration will be held on Saturday July 26, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This year's event will focus on the Great Lakes as a whole, and will bring together all of ISEA's past and present supporters.  Join us for family fun all day! Mid-afternoon, we will be taking a family photo, of all ISEA's past and present volunteers. Be sure to check back on this page for more details as they become available.

The Classic Boat Show was held annually in Suttons Bay for 25 years until 2004. Inland Seas revived the show in 2012 and plans to make it an annual event. "We are pleased to bring the Classic Boat Show back to Suttons Bay," said ISEA's Founder Tom Kelly. "This event will bring together a diverse group of sailboats, motorboats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats and prams and will give the public a chance to meet the owners and see these boats up close."

ISEA Reaches 100,000 Students

Thursday, June 5 marked a milestone for Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) as they welcomed the 100,000th student aboard the Schoolship. Emma Quick (pictured in pink fleece next to E.D. Fred Sitkins), a sixth grader from Platte River Elementary (pictured below), received the honor of boarding the schooner as the 100,000th student to participate in ISEA's one-of-a-kind, hands-on, science-based, educational programs on the Great Lakes.

Record-setting Year for ISEA

Inland Seas Education Association has been working to protect the Great Lakes and foster the next generation of scientist, and we are happy to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Our one-of-a-kind unique approach to education, science, and stewardship of the Great Lakes has been the key to the organizations success.

2014 is a very special year for the organization as it hits several key milestones and accomplishments.  Since the organization was established in 1989, we have had the opportunity to impact the lives of people of all ages and we are excited that this May we will welcome our 100,000 young, future scientist aboard the ISEA schooner, which will also be celebrating a milestone as the boat hits its 20th anniversary.  In addition, the organization will be celebrating its 25th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of our education center building. These accomplishments have been made possible by your donations.

With so many things to celebrate, ISEA will be hosting a Great Lakes Celebration, Saturday, July 26, 2014.  This celebration will not only recognize the accomplishments of ISEA, but is intended to be a family fun activity that will you will no want to miss. Mark your calendar and look for updates on our site about the wide range of activities that will be going on that day.
